Holidays and festivals in Geneva
Travellers will find that the best time to visit Geneva is between May and October. The winter months are relatively mild though compared to the rest of Switzerland. The city has many national and cultural holidays and festivals throughout the year. The beginning of May sees the Marathon being run by thousands of athletes. The Bol d’Or is a regatta held on Lake Geneva every June. The lake is also the location every August for the Fêtes de Genève, a summer event with an hour long fireworks display. On, or around, the 12th December the city commemorates the L'Escalade, a military victory over the troops of the Duke of Savoy in 1602.
Before arriving in Geneva
Hire cars are recommended and practical for exploring the mountains. Geneva is one of the most expensive cities in the world and thus the cost of living is quite high. A meal in a restaurant starts at about 20 CHF, which is roughly £14, and a beer costs around 7.50 CHF, or £5. A local speciality is the "Longeole", a type of raw sausage.
Local Geneva facts
Geneva Airport is located close to the city centre. Travellers with a valid boarding pass can get a free public transport ticket which is valid for 80 minutes. A train to the main station, Gare Cornavin, takes around 7 minutes. Without the free ticket the journey costs around 3 CHF. Bus no.5 and trolley bus no.10 take about 30 minutes to get there for the same price. A taxi to the station costs about 35-45 CHF. 3 star hotels near the Gare Cornavin cost roughly 135 CHF upwards per night. Hostel accommodation costs roughly 25 CHF per person per night. Public transport around the city is very good. If you are staying in a hotel, youth hostel or campsite you will be given a Geneva Transport Card which lets you use public transport for free. Taxis are generally quite expensive, but usually unnecessary as the public transport system is so good. Bicycles can be hired to travel around and explore the city. The old town centre is quite hilly though. Geneva is in the French speaking part of Switzerland.
