Wonderful Bangalore for business, sightseeing and culture
Founded by the 16th century ruler Kempe Kowda in 1537, Bangalore has a wealth of wonderful monuments and buildings to visit, and a rich culture to explore. With many museums, art galleries and natural places of beauty to visit nearby, Bangalore is also one of the biggest business centres in India.
Bangalore at its best
October to March is dry and warm, and Bangalore summers are also some of the mildest in India, reaching only about 36°. Monsoon is wet and humid and from June to October. Hindu and Muslim festivals are both celebrated. For events, the 15th of August is the Biannual Flower Show, and Republic Day is on 26th January (Independence Day). 9 days in March or April are dedicated to, the Bangalore Karaga ("Karaga Shaktyotsava")a festival dedicated to Hindu Goddess Draupadi. April sees the Someshwara Car festival, a procession to the Halasuru Someshwara Temple (Ulsoor). The Ist November is Karnataka Rajyotsava, a public holiday celebrating the foundation of Karnataka state.
Before you get to Bangalore
British passport holders need a visa, from the Indian High Commission, see their website for further details. British citizen passport holders may be able to apply for an e-Tourist Visa if flying to some airports.
Get vaccinated against Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid and get boosters for any routine vaccinations, including Polio. The official language in Bangalore is Kannada, but Hindi is also used. English will get you by, and most road signs etc, are in English. The cost of living is cheap, a basic Thali is about Rs 100 INR and a restaurant meal is about Rs 300.
Getting about in Bangalore
Buses, e.g. BMTC Vayu Vajra, are between about Rs 50-250 to various parts of Bangalore city. A pre-paid taxi from the airport, (counters in terminal) is around Rs 1,200, and a metered AC Taxi is between Rs 700 - 1000. Accommodation: please note that there is a 20% tax on all advertised prices. A cheap room is Rs 700, mid range: Rs 1500 and Luxury is about Rs 4000. A bus day pass is around Rs 40, but is not valid on Vajra buses. Auto rickshaws are metered, and cost around Rs 15 x distance in km, with the minimum charge set at Rs 25, and a 10% surcharge applied at night. Heavy luggage will also cost around Rs 10-20.
Taxis: metered and booked in advance. Flat rate: Rs 150 for anywhere within Bangalore. No tip's expected for auto rickshaw and taxis.
