The seasons in Lagos
Lagos has two rainy seasons: April-June and October-November. The dry season is usually from December through to March with Harmattan winds which are windy and dusty. This vibrant city has many festivals and holidays like the Eyo Festival (Yoruba Festival) for which dates do vary. There's also the Lagos Black Heritage Festival with dance and culture that is held in May. Christmas Day and Easter Sunday are the Christian public holidays, and Muslim festivals such as Eid Al Fitri, Eid Al Maulud and Eid Al Kabir are also public holidays.
Lagos travel preparations
British nationals need a visa and a passport with 6 months till expiry before travelling to Lagos. Vaccinations are also very important before travelling as there's a high risk of contracting malaria and other diseases. It's recommended you make an appointment with your GP six weeks before travel in order to have vaccines for diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Poliomyelitis, Typhoid, Tetanus, Yellow Fever. There's also a chance of catching cholera, Hepatitis B, Rabies and Meningitis, so make sure you are vaccinated against these diseases. The official language is English and the local language is Yoruba. The cost of living in Lagos is quite cheap, meals are around 600 NGN. Bukkas sell mouth-watering street food. For handicrafts and souvenirs, visit the Balogun and Jankara markets. Lekki market sells cheap antiques.
After landing in Lagos airport
Lagos Murtala Mohammed International Airport is 20 miles from Lagos city centre. Yellow taxis take around 45 minutes and cost about 6,000 NGN. There's also car hire available at the airport. When it comes to accommodation average price hotels are around 10,000 NGN per person for one night. The easiest way to get around Lagos is by taxi, however do negotiate the price before you get into the car. Fares are normally around 400 NGN. Alternatively you can travel by bus, BRT has separate lanes. Tickets are in the region of 70 NGN upwards while yellow buses cost about 20 NGN. To avoid traffic jams, take a ferry, fares are around 50 NGN. How about using Okada (motorbike taxis)? Make enquiries about local fares. You could also hire a car with a driver for approx 1,000-2,000 NGN per hour, remember to haggle for the best price. The roads are often congested and parking fees amount to approx. 250 NGN.
