History
The company was founded in 1947 by the Cypriot government, some private investors and British European Airways. The government of Cyprus took over 53.2% of the shares after the country gained independence and thus became the main shareholder. The home base of the airline was the capital Nicosia until the Turkish invasion in 1974. During the riots some of the fleet was damaged and the airport was no longer available for Cyprus Airways. As a result the company moved its base to Larnaca.
The loss of machines was initially compensated for by leasing aircraft. In subsequent years, the company acquired more aircraft and finally in 1984, bought its first Airbus A 310. Cyprus Airways now owns a fleet of Airbus aircraft.
