Malta travel tips

Mediterranean Malta

Malta is a charming island in the Mediterranean Sea. It has long been a favourite for holidaymakers who wish to get away from it all and relax in a peaceful environment.

Malta throughout the year

The climate in Malta is suitable for visitors all year round, whether travelling on business or pleasure. The island has a wet and windy winter while the summer months of April to October are hot and dry. The peak season summer months are ideal for beach lovers who want to relax, chill out and enjoy the Mediterranean sunshine. There are many holidays and religious festivals held on the island. Malta is a Catholic country that celebrates the normal Christian holidays of Christmas and Easter. Planning a visit to coincide with the Festival of Mnarja during the end of June is an added highlight. Villages also celebrate their patron saints throughout the year with relevant festivals, which are great fun to see.

Planning for a Malta holiday

Make sure you plan ahead before travelling to Malta which is the largest and busiest of the three islands, Malta, Gozo and Comino. Gozo is comparatively quiet while Comino is much smaller and mostly a nature reserve. Valletta, the capital city of Malta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and well worth a visit. The cost of living here, including food and transport is generally cheaper than in most other European countries. Expect to pay about 10 Euros for a meal out in a restaurant, where seafood is a speciality.

Maltese transport system and finding a hotel

Transport from the airport to the city centre of Valletta is approx 5 kms (3 miles). There are good public transport connections from the airport with night bus services starting with the letter X. Look out for buses X4, X5 and X7 which serve Valletta. The island's official white taxis cost around 10-30 Euros from the airport depending on your destination.

For travelling around, the Arriva bus ticket is valid for two hours and priced approximately 1.50 Euros in winter, 2 Euros in summer and 3 Euros at night, tickets are available from the bus driver. A seven day prepaid card will cost you approx 21 Euros. White taxis cost approx 15 Euros for short journeys. It is easy to hire a car to see other more remote parts of the island. Maltese and English are both widely spoken around the island so you should have no problem communicating with the friendly people.

Hostel prices start from around 15 Euros off-peak in shared rooms while 3 star hotels cost about 70 Euros for a double room.
