London Stansted travel tips

Major capital in northern Europe

London is one of the most popular destinations in Europe and in the world. With its unique architecture, world-class museums, great fashion and shopping, huge parks and a vibrant nightlife, the English capital offers visitors plenty of things to see and do.

Best period to travel

The climate in London is wet and windy most of the time, but the temperatures remain relatively mild even during winter. A wide range of events are held all through the year and some of the highlights include the world-famous Notting Hill Carnival during the bank holiday weekend at the end of August, as well as the Chinese New Year in February. Additionally, the Boat Race and the London Marathon are both held in April.

Things to note before you go

Travellers planning on renting a car should keep in mind that the Inner City Congestion Charge is implemented during the week and costs about £11 per day. The cost of living in London is quite high and things tend to be more expensive than in other cities in the UK, especially when it comes to accommodation, restaurant meals, snacks, and public transport.

Travelling around London and accommodation

The fastest way to go from Stansted airport to central London is to take a train from the railway station. Trains travel to London Liverpool Street Station every 15 minutes and the journey lasts around 45 minutes. The price is approx. £8 and you should book online for discounted rates. Otherwise, CrossCountry Trains go to Cambridge in around 35 minutes and also link the airport to destinations in the Midlands and Cambridgeshire. Local buses travel to nearby towns like Harlow, Colchester and Bishop's Stortford, while National Express coaches serve various other towns and cities. It is also possible to take an Easybus to Baker Street or Old Street Station in London. Taxis can be booked from reservations desks in the arrivals terminal. As Stansted airport is near the M11 and the M25, it makes travelling around the South East of England quite easy. Cheap accommodation in London includes hostel rooms for around £20/night, while mid-range hotel rooms start from about £40. Public transport is extensive and organised in zones. Single tickets cost about £6.50 but travelcards are available with daily passes at ca. £12-15. Oyster cards are useful to get discounted fares and the £5 deposit is refundable.
