The State of Goa in Western India is one of the world's most popular tourist destinations. Goa has everything for a fantastic vacation, from breathtaking beaches to street markets, traditional restaurants and historical buildings. There are many attractions here to keep you entertained during your visit like the Se Cathedral, Shanta Durga Temple, Dudhsagar Falls, Casino Royale, Goa State Museum and Chapora Beach.

Best time to travel to Goa

The best time to travel to Goa is in the winter between the months of mid November to mid February. At this time of year, daytime temperatures are about 28 degrees C. It's a good idea to avoid the monsoon season from the beginning of June. Planning a visit to Goa to coincide with one of the many holidays and festivals is a great idea. February sees the Goa Carnival while in August and September there's the Ganesha Chaturthi which lasts for ten days. During October and November is Diwali and Christian holidays are celebrated at Christmas (December) and Easter (April).

Before you travel

The official language in Goa is Konkani. Hindi and Marathi are also spoken. If you intend to travel to Goa during holidays and festivals remember to book transport and hotels well in advance. The cost of living and most prices are lower than in New Delhi. Cheap thali Rs 150, restaurant meals Rs 400.

Local information

There are pre-paid taxis available for transport from the airport to the city centre. See the official taxi rate board outside arrivals hall, e.g. to Panjim costs about Rs 700, Anjuna Rs 1,000, Aramabol Rs 1,400, Agonda Rs 1,500. It's highly recommended to agree on the amount in advance for non pre-paid taxis or autos. For basic accommodation expect to pay Rs 700, mid range Rs 2,500 and luxury Rs 4,000. Public bus services are available with Kadamba Transport Corp. The minimum fare is around Rs 3 for 2 km and Rs 1 for every subsequent km. Travelling within Goa State is also fairly cheap. Bus fares cost about between 8 and 10 rupees, and between 10 to 15 rupees for 30 to 40 km. Motorcycle taxi is the cheapest form of transport. Goa is a very popular destination especially with leisure tourists. It's worth noting that many shops are closed during the siesta in the middle of the day, 13.30 - 15.30. In Panaji most shops usually shut around eight in the evening.
