Copenhagen travel tips

Idyllic and exultant Copenhagen

Denmark was once voted as the happiest country in the world, via the UN's World Happiness Report. Its capital city, Copenhagen, is a breath of fresh air with its striking waterfront, iconic architecture and Michelin starred restaurants.

When is it best to travel?

Copenhagen is a great city and one that you'll really love all year round. Sun worshippers should avoid travelling from December through to February, as the weather is gloomy and cold. Danish people love New Year's Eve when restaurants serve up a feast while impressive firework displays bid farewell to the old year. May 1st is International Worker's Day and employees work a half day, while the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, from July 1st till the 10th, showcases international Jazz musicians.

Biking around the city and budgets

Copenhagen is small and easy to explore on foot. It's also cycle friendly and bike hire shops are plentiful. If you fancy biking around the city, you'll have no problem hiring one. Copenhagen is expensive and accommodation costs are around 20% higher than those in the UK. Drinks are also more expensive here as are groceries, so be sure to compensate with extra funds in your budget to cover all expenses. Copenhagen is an hour ahead of London.

Transportation and accommodation tips

A 15 minute journey on the Metro Line 2 or the InterCity Train will take you to the Main Station. You can catch the 5A Bus to central Copenhagen as an alternative. Tickets will cost you about 32 DKK. Taxis also travel to the city and taxi ranks are situated at terminals 1 and 3. Copenhagen has a huge choice of hotels and hostels for those on a tighter budget. Be warned though, hostels in Copenhagen are far from cheap and still quite expensive in comparison to UK hostels. Public transport is highly recommended and buses, trains, the metro and boats all provide a 24-hour service. A Flexcard 7-day ticket or 24-hour ticket gives access to all modes of transport. The Copenhagen card and City Pass are recommended for tourists and give discounts to major tourist attractions and a selection of museums. The Krone is the Danish currency, although most people use credit cards for small and large purchases.
