Budapest travel tips

Budapest - a taste of Hungary

Sitting on the banks of the River Danube, Budapest is a handsome city packed with interesting architecture, fascinating museums and a grand palace. A visit to Budapest is not complete without a stop at the Széchenyi Baths - a huge outdoor thermal pool which is open all year round, regardless of the weather.

Visit Budapest in the warmer months to enjoy the city at its best

Budapest can be cold and dull in the winter months, so the best time to visit is between April and October. Beginning in mid-March, the Spring Festival runs over 14 days and is all about art and culture. In mid August there is a seven-day festival called Sziget. The national holiday on 20th August is celebrated with a sound and light show on the Danube.

Good Budapest tips

The cost of living in Hungary is quite a lot cheaper than it is in the UK. Expect to pay around 1500 HUF for lunch and 300 HUF for a beer. Good quality restaurant food can be found in the evenings for very affordable prices. To get the best food, avoid the tourist traps on Váci Street where prices are inflated and dishes are less authentic. When it comes to finding accommodation, hostels cost around 2500 HUF per person, per night and a three star hotel room starts at 6000 HUF.

The Budapest Card is worth purchasing for free entry to some galleries and museums, and free access to some public transport. A 24-hour pass costs around 4500 HUF, and there are 48-hour and 72-hour cards available as well.

Transport in Budapest

To get from the airport to the city centre, hop on the express train to Nyugati Station. The fare is roughly 620 HUF one way and the trip takes 25 minutes. There is a bus too which costs around 450 HUF and takes about 50 minutes. Taxis charge around 6500 HUF for the trip.

Budapest has a metro and bus system where a day pass is priced at approximately 1650 HUF. Single tickets cost around 450 HUF and packs of 10 are roughly 3000 HUF. There are plenty of taxis to hire as well, and the fares are generally cheaper than they are in England. To get a real feel for the city, hire a bike for around 1800 HUF per half day and tour the streets like a local.
