Brussels is known around the world as being the headquarters of the European Union. The city is home to quaint cafes, modern shops, museums, art galleries, and fine examples of 17th century guildhouses.

When is the best time for a trip to Brussels?

Brussels typically has warm summers and mild winters, making it a suitable destination throughout the year. The hottest months are from the beginning of June until the end of September when temperatures usually don't fall below 10°C. It's a good idea to be prepared for rainfall, and remember to pack an umbrella.

Brussels is big on festivals and there is usually something taking place here every month of the year. In May is the Fete de L'Iris, which involves organised activities, live music and street entertainment. In early July is the colourful Ommegang Pageant, which is a large procession in honour of Charles V.

After arriving in Brussels

Brussels is officially a multilingual city. The majority of its inhabitants speak French as their first language; however, English is widely spoken too. Expect to pay approximately 15EUR for a meal at an inexpensive restaurant. In local shops, domestic beer (0.5 litre) costs about 1.45EUR, while a bottle of mid-range wine costs around 7EUR.

Getting around Brussels and accommodation costs

Brussels has a good transport network and visitors have a choice of options for travelling from Brussels Airport to the city centre. There are taxis available in front of the arrivals hall, and the fare typically costs around 45EUR to the city. The journey takes approximately 40 minutes. The journey by train takes approximately 17 minutes and costs about 8.50EUR. Airport Line bus shuttle services to the centre costs around 6EUR, and the journey takes about 30 minutes. Limousine hire and car rentals are also available at the airport.

Hostels cost from roughly 16EUR per person, per night, while 3-star hotels might cost from 22.60EUR.

Transport in Brussels includes buses, trams, and the metro, which are operated by STIB. Single trips cost about 2.10EUR, while 5 trips are around 8EUR. A two-day travelcard costs approximately 14EUR. There are also rail services provided by Infrabel. Taxis charge a minimum fare of 8EUR for the first 3 kilometres, and then approximately 1.80EUR per kilometre thereafter. However, many of the city's top attractions are within easy walking distance of each other.
