The airport was first in use back in 1939 and is located approximately 16 km or 10 miles northwest of the city centre in the municipality of Besovets (Бесовец). Passengers travelling by car can reach the airport following the signposts on highway A-133.
The bus number 101 operates a regular service from the bus stop in Besovets - about 1 km or less than half a mile south of the airport - it goes to Gargarin place in Petrozavodsk.
