Location
Opened in 1912, Hamburg is the oldest airport in Germany. It is located about 9 km or 5 miles north of Hamburg city centre. Motorists can reach the terminal on the B433.

Between the main railway station and the airport, the S-Bahn 1 operates a service, the journey takes about 25 minutes. The 606 night bus also operates at night. HVV city bus numbers 26, 39, 274 and 292 stop at the airport, and buses 23, 34, 114 and 292 stop nearby.

There is also a regular private shuttle bus service between the airport and the Hanseatic cities of Lübeck and Kiel.

History
After the hangars Hamburg GmbH (HLG) were established, a suitable site was also chosen in 1912. In the first year airfield use was reserved for Zeppelins, but in 1913, airports were also able to use the southern part of the area.

By as early as 1913 aircraft were also permitted to use the south-eastern corner of the area. 1916, during the First World War, the halls burned down completely. Although these were then again rebuilt, they could not be used because of the Versailles Treaty.

In 1945, the airport was taken over by the British allies, who in cooperation with the American and French allies, three years later provided a temporary runway for the population of West Berlin. In 1955, German Lufthansa took over Hamburg airport and also built a hangar to repair, maintain and alter machines with the Lufthansa Technik Group. This now has over thirty global offshoots, the headquarters are still in Hamburg.

In the 60's, there were attempts to relocate the airport to Kaltenkirchen, due to the fact that capacities were exhausted and the airport was being squeezed between several residential areas. This idea was rejected however, because the economic power of the Hanseatic city Hamburg is primarily geared towards the service sector and many medium-sized businesses in the metropolis rely on a a city airport for quick access.

At the beginning of the 90s, the project "HAM21" expansion programme for the modernisation of the airport was planned, the old Terminal 2 was demolished in the course of building work and then rebuilt to comply with current standards. The renaming ceremony and the simultaneous opening of the new Terminal 1 was held in the spring 2005. Another name change followed a short time later: the old Terminal 4 was then called Terminal 2.
