Hurghada travel tips

Enjoy Hurghada – some tips

The city of Hurghada is located on the Red Sea in Sinai, Egypt. Every year, numerous tourists are drawn to the town, where they enjoy lying on the beach or swimming in the beautiful azure waters of the Red Sea. The area is also very popular for diving and snorkelling.

When should you go to Hurghada?

The periods between February and June as well as September and November are best for holidays on the Red Sea. The winter months are also pleasantly mild. Summer, on the other hand, is characterised by very hot temperatures, often exceeding 40 °C.

During Islamic holidays such as Ramadan or Mohammed's birthday, the locals celebrate and shops are closed. This is also the case during Eid al-Adha, the Islamic Feast of Sacrifice, which is celebrated for a whole four days. Exact dates vary from year to year.

What do you need to travel to Hurghada?

Before travelling, you should apply for a visa at the Egyptian Embassy in the UK. This can also be issued on arrival, but will then be more expensive. In both cases, the visa is valid for 30 days. You should also make sure that your passport is valid for at least another six months. Vaccination against diphtheria, typhoid, hepatitis A and tetanus is recommended.

With regard to food, thorough food hygiene should be observed: water should only be drunk from closed containers and fruit and vegetables should be washed and ideally only eaten cooked. Food, like most things, is cheaper in Egypt than in the UK. You can get a cheap restaurant meal for around 30-50 EGP. A soft drink costs 3-4 EGP and a bottle of water from the supermarket costs ca. 3-4 EGP.

How do you get from Hurghada Airport to your final destination?

It takes only 20 minutes to get from the airport in Hurghada to the city centre by minibus and the fare is about 25 EGP. Hotel prices are also cheap: a room will cost about 50 EGP. There are also rooms that offer more luxury for about 125 EGP. The minibus takes you around the city for about 1-3 EGP each way. You can also take taxis for about 5-10 EGP for a short trip.
