Venice: The city of romance

Venice is best known for its art galleries, amazing architecture, beautiful waterways and romantic gondola rides.  


Best Venice travel season 

The best time to visit Venice is from April to October. The winters get very wet and cold here, and flooding sometimes occurs during the colder months. 

Festivals are held throughout the year. One of the most popular is Biennale di Venezia, an art exhibition that takes place once every two years. Venice also hosts a carnival each year in February, 10 to 17 days before Ash Wednesday, although specific dates vary. On the 3rd Sunday in July, Venice is treated to the Festa del Redontore, which features processions, fireworks and concerts. In August to September, an international film festival is held for 11 days on Lido Island. 


Pre-travel advice and tips 

You'll save money while in Venice, as the cost of living is a cheaper, in comparison to the UK and London. In fact, you can actually enjoy a meal, at a restaurant for as little as 10 euros, and beer costs around 4 euros. Alcohol is also significantly cheaper here, while food and groceries cost very little in markets.


Transportation and accommodation 

The "FLY" shuttle bus, operated by "ATVO", provides services to Piazzale Roma, in central Venice, and a one-way ticket normally costs around 15 euros. The number 15 ACTV bus takes around 25 minutes to travel from the airport to the city centre and an adult single ticket costs about 8 euros. 

The "Alilaguna" water bus, charges approximately 15 euros for a single ticket to the city centre, while taxis cost around 40 euros. 

Expect to pay around 25 euros a night for hostel accommodation and 50 euros a night per person for a room in a 3-star hotel.  

The Vaporettos water buses provide public services to the city centre. 75 minute tickets cost around 7.50 euros and day passes, which are also valid on buses, cost around 18 euros. You can also purchase 2 day tickets, for about 30 euros and 7 day passes for approximately 60 euros. 

Carta Venezia city passes are recommended if staying for 3 days or more. 

Taxi prices start at around 16 euros for 3 km, with 2 extra euros for each additional km. 

Many of the tourist attractions are located centrally and are convenient to explore on foot.
