Although Delhi is a great place to visit all year long, the best time for weather conditions and climate is from October to March. Travellers keen to witness large scale public holidays can see the Holi spring festival in March. The 15 August sees Indian Independence Day with a huge parade in Delhi. The spectacular event is a memorable occasion for the entire country. Other great reasons to plan a trip to Delhi include the fantastic cuisine, historical temples and buildings and incredible museums and art venues.
A visa is needed to enter India, be sure to contact the Indian High Commission to obtain one. Passports need 2 blank pages for the visa and need to be valid for at least 180 days at the time of visa application. A valid polio vaccine certificate may be needed when arriving from affected countries. Other recommended vaccines include hepatitis A, typhoid, tetanus and diphtheria. Women should be especially vigilant when travelling alone. Indian prices are much lower than UK prices in many areas, although quality electronics will cost about the same. India Standard Time is UTC/GMT +5:30 hours. There is no daylight saving time and in summer Delhi is 4:30 hours ahead of the UK.
Visitors travelling from the airport to the centre can take the Metro line 2 from 4.40 am till 23.30 h, or use the shuttle bus to Connaught Place or a prepaid taxi. A guest house or hostel costs from around 500 INR per night, roughly equivalent to £5. Cheap three star hotels cost on average about 1400 INR/night/person or around £14. There is an inexpensive public transport network with buses, metro and rickshaws. Taxi prices are much cheaper than in the UK.
