A vibrant metropolis

Delhi is a colourful city that is both intense and fascinating. With numerous monuments, religious buildings, parks and museums, the capital of India offers a myriad of things to do and see to its visitors.

Best period to travel

The best time to visit Delhi is between October and March. Also, in terms of holidays and events, the spring festival of Holi is held in March at a date varying according to the Hindu calendar. This is one of the most exciting festivities to witness and take part in. As for national holidays, Independence Day, which is celebrated on 15th August, is the occasion to watch a big parade in the streets of the Indian capital.

Things to know before your visit

A visa is required to visit Delhi and visitors need to contact the Indian High Commission to obtain one. It is important to know that passports need to be valid for at least 180 days when applying for the visa and they must have two blank pages left. As for vaccines, a valid polio vaccine certificate is required when travelling from certain countries. Otherwise, it's recommended to have up-to-date hepatitis A, typhoid, tetanus and diphtheria vaccines. When it comes to safety, women should be careful, especially when travelling alone. Costs are much lower in India than in the UK, even though the price of quality electronics is usually similar. There is no daylight saving time in India, so Delhi is 4h30 ahead of the UK in summer and 5h30 in winter.

Local information: transportation and accommodation

Travelling from the airport to the centre of Delhi, visitors can take Metro line 2 (between 4.40 am and 11.30 pm) or the shuttle bus to Connaught Place. Alternatively, a prepaid taxi can be booked. Budget accommodation is available, with rooms in a guest house or a hostel starting at around 500 INR per night. 3-star hotels also offer rooms costing about 1,400 INR per night per person. Public transport is cheap, with a network consisting of buses, the metro and rickshaws. Also, taxi prices are much lower than in the UK.
