Johannesburg is an ideal place to go to at all times of the year. For a taste of cultural history, visitors could join in celebrating Freedom Day on April 27th and Heritage Day on Sept 24th, complete with its annual parties and events. Likewise, partake in the Johannesburg Beer Festival for the first two weeks in October, and ring in the New Year on Dec. 31st with the Joburg Carnival.

Before leaving to Johannesburg, ensure you possess a valid passport for at least 30 days after departing. Moreover, each passport must have two blank pages during the time of entry and departure. British passport holders do not require a visa for tourist visits for up to 90 days. 

All visitors should enquire with their general practitioner if any vaccines are necessary before travelling to South Africa.

Most tourists report a safe visit to Johannesburg, but crime levels can be high. It is not recommended to take a minibus taxi anywhere and may be safer to use a guide when visiting some parts of the city.

Local Information for Visitors

The cost of living in Johannesburg is generally lower than in London and the United Kingdom. Restaurant prices are around half the price of those in London. In addition, South Africa operates on the SAST time zone (UTC or GMT +2), an hour ahead of UK time in the summer and two hours in the winter.

At the airport, visitors can take the "Gautrain" running between the airport and city centre for a 30-minute trip. One ticket will cost approximately 125 ZAR, with an additional 12 ZAR approximately to purchase the Gautrain Gold Card. Despite the lack of designated bus stops, you can flag a bus down on the main roads. Alternatively, take a taxi, which starts at about 10 ZAR for every kilometre. A taxi from the airport to Johannesburg will cost approximately 400 ZAR, they can however be rare in Johannesburg.

Spending the night at a guesthouse or a hostel will cost around 300 ZAR. A three-star hotel starts at approximately 700 ZAR for each person a night.
