The dry seasons are from mid-December to the end of February and from mid-June to the end of September. On 1st June, Madaraka Day, the country's independence is celebrated with parades. Tips before you arrive in Nairobi

A tourist visa is needed. Passports should be valid for at least 6 months, and have two blank pages. Dengue fever, malaria and cholera all occur in Kenya. Recommended inoculations include Hepatitis A and B, Yellow Fever, Rabies, Tetanus, Diphtheria, Meningitis, Polio and Typhoid. Anti-malarial medication is recommended if you plan on travelling beyond Nairobi. Tourists are advised to avoid Eastleigh, Pangani, slum areas and the inner city at night due to high crime rates. There's a no smoking policy in public spaces in central Nairobi. Boil tap water or drink bottled water, peel or cook vegetables and fruit. Long clothing and mosquito repellent and sleeping under a mosquito net are recommended. The cost of living is much cheaper than that in the UK. Restaurant meals start at about 500KES, beer is about 200KES. Non-alcoholic drinks are around 100KES, including bottled water in supermarkets. Haggle when shopping in Biashara Street or Massai Market and try local foods like Nyama Choma (grilled meat).

Nairobi local information

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is located 15km from the business district. A taxi costs about 1,500KES and takes approximately 30 minutes to reach the city centre. Bus 34 takes about 40 minutes to the Ambassador Hotel, costing around 50KES. Hostel beds start from about 800KES and luxury accommodation costs around 10,000KES. For getting about in Nairobi, walking is usually the quickest option due to traffic jams. Traffic is heavy especially during the rush hours 7am to 9am and 4.30 to 6.30pm. Buses go to the suburbs with fares between about 10 and 40KES. Agree on the taxi fare beforehand and pay on arrival. Taxis, with a yellow line on the side, cost about 500KES for the start rate and about 200KES per kilometre.
