Modern meets ancient in Alicante

Alicante, on the Costa Blanca, is a historic port which has been modernised into a glamourous holiday destination, while still retaining some old Spanish charm. The sweeping bay is lined with high rise hotels set against an impressive mountain backdrop, which is home to Santa Barbara Castle.

Alicante: best times and highlights

Alicante is pleasant all year round, with mild winters and hot summers, the peak season is July and August. St. John's bonfire celebrations start from around 20th June and mark the start of summer. There are fireworks displays and figures of paper mache are set on fire on 24th June. The Moors and Christians Festival (Moros y Cristianos) takes place between the 21st and 24th April, to commemorate the 12th Century battles between Christians and Arabs.

Good to know before you travel

For less crowded beaches head slightly out of town. For a quiet day out head to Tabarca Island, a car free, the small walled town set in a nature reserve. Paella is a favourite regional dish. The cost of living in Alicante is around 30% lower than London and restaurant prices are usually around 45% lower. Clocks should be set an hour forward on arrival.

Local travel and accommodation information

The airport bus serving central Alicante costs approximately 3.80 euros and takes around 20 minutes for the journey, buses run at 20 minutes intervals. Local buses from the airport to Alicante, Benidorm, Torrevieja or Murcia etc. leave from the terminal building departures area. A taxi to central Alicante costs approximately €25. Alicante airport is also used by tourists heading to Benidorm, Torrevieja and other Costa Blanca beach resorts. There is a good bus network, trams also go to important destinations in Alicante and along the Costa Blanca. Single tickets for Zone 1 are priced at around 1.35 euros. A 10 journey rechargeable card costs about €7.60, plus the fee for the card is around €2. Central Alicante is small enough to explore by foot. Taxis are less expensive than in London, but not much faster than public transport. Hotels start from around €40 per person per night and hostel prices start from approximately €15 per person per night, in shared rooms.
