Useful information about Islamabad

A visa is required by British passport holders. Passports must also be valid for at least 6 months on application date. It is advisable to get vaccinated for Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid and Polio and best to consult a doctor at least two months before the planned travel date. All the usual routine inoculations should also be up do date and boosters given if necessary. Islamabad is a relatively quiet place, unlike neighbouring Rawalpindi. Head to Gandharan, city of Taxila for archaeology. Living here is cheaper than London and Islamabad is more expensive than other Pakistan regions. A basic meal costs approximately 200Rs and a business lunch about 500Rs.

Arrival, transport and accommodation

Use shared Suzuki cars for travel from the airport to the central city as there are no buses. Taxis cost around 400Rs, less if hailed outside the airport. Negotiate the price, especially with black and white taxis before hiring. The airport is often busy so allow two hours to catch a departing flight. Guesthouse and cheap hotel accommodation costs around 1000Rs. More luxurious hotels cost about 2200PKR per night. Minibuses are cheap with monthly travelcards costing about 3,500Rs.
