Funchal and Madeira
The beautiful capital city of Funchal can be found on the island of Madeira. It was once an old fishing port and still has lots of charm. There are plenty of things to do and see here, something for everyone.
Madeira Climate and local events
Madeira has an all year round mid sub-tropical climate. In January the temperatures are about 15 degrees C climbing up to about 23 degrees C in August. The warmest months are August and September. Peak season is June to November with water temperatures of more than 20 degrees C. Why not travel here in February to enjoy the Carnival in Funchal? Other holidays and festivals include April to May the sugar cane harvest, 15th August Assumption Day (with a procession to Nossa Senhora do Monte). At the end of August is the Wine Festival.
Some local facts
The Portuguese language is often spoken with a strong dialect on Madeira. Don't worry, English is also widely spoken. The cost of living in Funchal and Madeira is much lower than in London and in the UK. An inexpensive meal will only cost you 7€ or so.
Getting there
From Funchal Airport (Airport Santa Catarina)to Funchal, take the Aerobus (8 Euros return, one-way 5 Euros). There's also a public bus, 3 Euros one-way. Taxis have meters although there is a surcharge for weekends, nights and luggage. When it comes to accommodation, 3 star hotels will cost around 26€ per night and 4 stars about 62€ per night. For public transport, you can buy seven day bus tickets which cost approximately 22€. Many visitors choose to hire a car. It's worth pointing out that roads are steep, winding and outside the capital city, petrol stations are few and far between. Expect to find free Wi-Fi in major cities and towns.
