Useful information about the flight from Belfast to Gran Canaria Las Palmas

Welcoming holiday island

With its golden beaches and high mountains, Gran Canaria is an ever-popular holiday destination. Sports and culture fans alike head for the third largest Canary Island throughout the year to discover its varied activities and international cuisine.

The 4 seasons in Gran Canaria

There's plenty for visitors to enjoy in all seasons. The Canary islands have a fairly constant climate. However, the weather may be cooler between mid-October and March, with the chance of strong winds. The south of the island is the warmest area, while the north is slightly cooler and has more rain. One of the most exciting times to visit Gran Canaria is during Carneval, held in Maspalomas and other areas in February and March. Another is Dias de las islas Canarias on May 30, a holiday marked with parties and concerts throughout the Canary Islands. There are also many parades and activities on Columbus Day, or "Día de la Hispanidad", a national holiday celebrated on October 12.

Island information

Gran Canaria's main tourist resorts, such as Playa del Ingles, are on the South Coast, while there are also various surf schools around the island. Mountain biking is ideally suited to the terrain. When eating out, a set lunch could cost from about 10 EUR, with popular local delicacies including "papas arrugadas con mojo". These are salty potatoes, served with a red and green sauce, which go well with fish. Most groceries cost slightly less here than similar items would in the UK.

Transport from the airport, public buses and prices of hotels

Travellers arriving at the airport can take bus routes to various local destinations. The number 60 runs to Las Palmas for about 3 EUR, or you can catch Bus 1 to Puerto de Mogan, with a fare of about 7 EUR. Buses 5 and 66 run to Faro de Maspalomas from around 5 EUR, buses 36 and 90 to Telde or bus 11 to Agüimes, each for a fare of about 2 EUR, and Bus 91 to Playa de Cura, from approximately 6 EUR.

A short journey with one of the local bus companies, Globalsu and Guaguas, costs from around 1.40 EUR for a single trip. Alternatively, taxi fares start from roughly 5 EUR for 3km, with about 1 EUR extra for each additional km travelled.  Hostels cost from about 20 EUR, while 3-star hotel prices are from around 40 EUR.
