History and culture in Kochi

For somewhere a little different this year, why not make Kochi your next holiday destination? It's one of India's major tourist destinations with lots of history, culture, dining and attractions to enjoy.

Kochi throughout the year

Kochi has a tropical climate with daytime temperatures of around 30-35 degrees Centigrade. Mid-May until September is the monsoon season while September-February has cool winds and light intermittent showers which is probably the best time to travel. February-May, the summer months, are very humid. Peak season is August-February. Kochi has numerous holidays and festivals like the Onam Harvest Festival held over ten days from mid August-mid September. The multi ethnic religious festivals of Holi and Diwali are held during Christmas and Easter. Islamic festivals are Eid ul-Fitr and Milad-e-sherif, dates for these vary. The Cochin Carnival is in December, this is a major festival with many parades.

Visas and vaccines before you go

Visas are needed by visitors from the UK, they are available from the Indian High Commission. You can get tourist visas on arrival at Kochi Airport, however do check with the Indian Commission before arranging travel. Make sure your routine vaccinations are up to date like Hepatitis A, Tetanus and Typhoid. During the monsoon season you may wish to consider having vaccines for Hepatitis B, Japanese Encephalitis, Rabies and Cholera. Avoid drinking the tap water while in Kochi. It is also a good idea to always boil, cook and peel vegetables as well as fruit before eating. The cost of living here is cheap, expect to pay around 50 RS for a full meal out. Accommodation prices are high compared to India in general, but of course much lower than UK going rates.
