Location
The airport was opened in 1952, and is located 11 km or 8 miles north of the centre of Hanover. Motorists can reach the airport on the motorway A322 at exit "Hannover Airport" as well as on the L190 national road. The A322 is a short section of motorway between the A7 and A2, north of Hanover.
Between the main station in Hanover and terminal C, the S-Bahn S5 operates a regular service, the journey takes about 15 minutes. Between Langenhagen town centre and the airport, the 470 bus operates a regular service. Current departure times are available locally or on the internet.
History
Before the construction of today's Hanover-Langenhagen Airport, there was another airport north of Hanover. This was the airport Vahrenwald. When expansion became impossible, the authotities decided to build another airport.
Although opened on 26.4.1952, the two airport terminals A and B, which are still in use today, were not in use until 1973. The third and largest terminal C was opned in 1998. Just in time for the Expo 2000, the underground train station was also opned providing a connection to the airport from the train station and the cities of Hameln, Bad Pyrmont and Paderborn. There is also a link to the Hanover Exhibition Grounds.
